O-G is a teaching technique under the category of Structured Literacy.
O-G is unique because:
1. Nothing is assumed - each child gets a fresh start to relearn reading in a logical way building skill upon skill.
2. Skills are logically and directly taught - If she has a particular skill, she progresses quickly, if not, the skill is re-taught to mastery.
3.Controlled text - A child reads and spells what he has been directly taught, so he doesn't resort to guessing.
4. O-G has been used for 100 years. It does not contain coordination or brain exercises, just great, logical strategies in a very controlled scope and sequence for decoding words using syllable division methods, syllable types and pattern recognition logically arranged in order of it's frequency and reliability in the American English language. Spelling is similiarly taught using faithful spelling rules. Approximately 85% of our language can be learned using this method.
Only 85% of our language, you say. Well, the alternative is that nearly every English word must become a memorized word without this technique.
