The quickest path to independence in school is the ability to read. After homeschooling for four years the last thing I expected was a child that would not read easily. The guilt I felt at not being able to motivate my child to even want to read or write was overwhelming and his frustration was alarming. I didn't know what to do.
Then my husband and I found the BrightSolutions.us website that had valuable and free information about dyslexia to help parents like us figure out why our child struggled and what to do about it. We went to a local dyslexia screener and tutor trained by the founder of Bright Solutions, Susan Barton. The screener identified our son with moderate dyslexia. Once we were introduced to the Barton Reading and Spelling System, an Orton-Gillingham based system, we started tutoring at home.
Now years later, is everything perfect? No, not perfect; our child will always have dyslexia, but he can tackle grade level reading, and his spelling is much improved. He now has strategies to cope, is able to remember the logic of reading and spelling rules and use them effectively. Reading and spelling are no longer a complete mystery.
Surprisingly, friends started asking me a lot of questions about dyslexia, so I decided to learn more. In 2013, I trained as a dyslexia specialist and screener. I hope to pass the learning on to you, so you can find the path that is best for you and your family on the journey of dyslexia, but first you have to be confident it's dyslexia.
In 2018, I trained as Certified Academic Language Therapist by ASDEC to be completed in 2020. I never stop learning to better serve struggling families.
